CelebPoker Package Winner Achieves Ambition
CelebPoker Package Winner… UK CelebPoker player Matthew Tranter took the next step in his poker career by winning a package to the Irish Winter Festival that took place from October 29th – 31st, 2011. As a loyal player of CelebPoker, Matt will be aiming for more package wins in our online satellites for land based poker tournaments. We caught up with him to find out a bit more. What do you do (occupation, studies, hobbies etc?)I have been making a living by playing poker for the last couple of years. Prior to this I studied software development. I greatly enjoy skiing, socializing, reading and a wide variety of music; primarily drum & bass and dubstep which I find very helpful as a driving force during long poker sessions. How long have you been playing poker and how did you start?I have been playing poker for 5 years. Poker first caught my attention when some of the better players started to move over from the real time strategy game “Starcraft” that I was playing competitively at the time, they all showed great results and this opened my mind to the advantage of investing my time and dedication into a more profitable venture. Televised poker also added to the appeal to get involved in this exciting game; seeing the pros at the time playing high stakes tournaments for millions of dollars helped fuel my desire to learn and hopefully one day compete with and defeat these great players. Did you use any special strategy to win the tournament?I vary my play style based on the players on my tables at the time. On some tables it is advantageous to play tight (only the best hands) and some loose (many hands), however either way I will try to play those hands aggressively making my opponents make tough decisions whilst giving me information about the strength of their hands. In this tournament I was able to play a loose aggressive style (this means i was playing a lot of hands whilst betting/raising/re-raising rather than calling) and had a very large stack going into the final table.A tight player will make it into the money positions in a tournament more than a loose player, however a loose player will go on the win much bigger prizes more often when they do make the money. Any key moments you remember from tournament? The final table is the most important part of the tournament, with the pay increasing steeply with each extra position gained; here outplaying the other players really matters.I was lucky to have a 2 – 1 chip lead on 2nd place going in to the FT and couldn’t really ask for a better start. The other players were all playing tight against me; trying to avoid me at all costs unless they had a monster hand. This is always a good thing as with nobody trying to contest pots with me I was effectively being given permission to constantly steal chips from the other players allowing me to extend my chip lead significantly… a lot of the pots i won on the FT could have gone to the other player had they tried to play back at me. What do you plan to do with the prize money?I plan to use a lot of the prize money to work my way into a number of large live events. I will be playing the Irish Winter Festival tournament in October and hope that this will be the first of many over the next couple of years. It has been an ambition of mine to expand in to the live poker scene for quite some time now and huge prizes are ready for the taking.I will also re-invest a lot of the money on the Celeb Poker cash/tournament tables in order to continue progressing up through the stakes striving to improve by playing better players and to earn bigger pay days. Advice to other players? You might have to play countless tournaments in order to take a big finish or it could happen on your first one. The important thing is to not let this high level variance affect your play, if you’re not happy with your results so far it does not necessarily mean you’re a bad player as luck is certainly a large factor in poker. Keep a clear head, always be trying to improve your game (there are many resources out there for an aspiring poker player to learn from), put in the hands and the results will follow.

Second Wave of Indictments
by Adam Marshall | May 24th, 2011 The first wave of federal indictments that took PokerStars, FullTilt, and Absolute Poker out of the U.S. market was called Black Friday. This second wave targeting sites like Doyle’s Room and TruePoker is now being called Blue Monday. The indictments came from Maryland early yesterday targeting the following sites… DoylesRoom.com TruePoker.com BookMaker.com 2Betsdi.com Funtimebingo.com GoldenArchCasino.com BetMaker.com BetGrandeSports.com Betehorse.com Beted.com Doyle Brunson formally announced his separation from Doyle’s Room earlier this month due to the current legal turmoil surrounding online poker. Obviously, a hallmark of a great player is knowing exactly when to cash in your chips. The indictments were the result of undercover work done by the Department of Homeland Security. An undercover payment processing business was created called Linwood Payment Solutions, which connected agents with executives inside those gaming operations. The covert processor made around 300,000 transactions in the meantime while tracking financial data. Of note is the fact that some of these sites operated outside the legally murky arena of online poker and in the much-more-illegal field of sports betting. Charges included money laundering and conducting an illegal gambling business but not the previous accusations of bank fraud or violations of the UIGEA. Although this attack pales in comparison to the Black Friday indictments, to some they still represent a push against poker as a whole. Others believe these to be the initial parts of the staging phase that ultimately leads to the long overdue regulation of online poker.

Team Titan and Sorel Mizzi on a Roll
Submitted on Fri, 2010-05-21 05:25 Sorel Mizzi, who made his name as a monster online poker player and signed with Team Titan at Titan Poker one month ago, has been burning up the poker tables in Europe. Mizzi finished in the money twice recently. European Poker Tour On the European Poker Tour (EPT), Mizzi captured sixth ($190,000) at the Grand Final High Roller event. As we noted in a recent article, the European Poker Tour is considered to be the richest poker tour around, with over a dozen events across the continent and one tourney in the Bahamas. Back in April, Mizzi was signed as the guru of Team Titan. Titan Poker has made it a priority to find new players online and mentor them into champs. When they signed Mizzi last month, he was already considered to be a top player and became the designated captain of the team. World Poker Tour His latest finish in the money was last week at the World Poker Tour Rendez-Vous a Paris. He finished second winning $159,000 in a 25-player, $20,000 buy in. Freddy Deeb took the main prize in the event. Thus far this year Mizzi has won $1,266,960. Watch out if you’re sitting across the green felt from him. Team Titan at Titan Poker has found a winner.

Two New Poker HOF Members Announced
On 8th November 2011, the induction of the two new Poker Hall of Fame members, Barry Greenstein and Linda Johnson will take place. They will be the 41st and 42nd members of the Poker Hall of Fame. Johnson, often known as “The First Lady of Poker” is only the second female who will have received the honor of joining the Poker Hall of Fame. The other female member, Barbara Enright, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. Greenstein is known as “The Robin Hood of Poker,” and he, along with Johnson were also amongst the finalists last year in 2010. The poker players that fit the criteria are first voted for by the general public and then a panel of 35 members of the media and those players who are currently in the Poker Hall of Fame take the final vote as to who should be the newest Poker Hall of Fame members. The official induction takes place on the same day that the World Series of Poker 2011 Main Event Championship begins. The WSOP Main Event and the induction ceremony and celebration will be taking place at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The induction ceremony will take place in the Penn & Teller Theater at 4.30pm, immediately before the Main Event begins. Greenstein said: “I’m happy to be inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside my friend Linda Johnson who has been the most fervent ambassador for poker for as long as I can remember.” Johnson had the following to say: “I am extremely proud and humbled to be voted into the Poker Hall of Fame. I feel lucky to have been involved in many facets of poker over the past 35 years. Being recognized by the industry is a tremendous honor.”

Related Posts The United States and Online Poker Regulation Time Tourney Games from PokerStars Merge Poker Back in the US Nominees for Poker Hall of Fame Announced World Series of Poker Europe Coming Soon Share on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace…

Strategy with Kristy Podcast: Amanda Musumeci Discusses WSOP Main Event
October 06 2011, Kristy Arnett Related Articles A Hand from the WSOP Main Event with Phil Collins Slow Playing Queens with John Racener Strategy with Kristy Podcast: Ben Wilinofsky Discusses Short-Stack Strategy Related Tournaments Share It Tags WSOP, Poker Strategy, Tournament Strategy, PokerNews Podcast Print Amanda Musumeci, 27, has the poker world at her well-manicured fingertips. She gained most of her poker experience online but has had impressive live success, as well. Most notably, she finished 62nd this year in the World Series of Poker Main Event for $131,000, and fell just shy of claiming the “Last Woman Standing” title. In this week’s edition of Strategy with Kristy, Musumeci talks about her deep run and her most interesting tournament decisions. Here is a snippet from the interview: I got moved to Donnie Mizrachi’s table, and he was sitting in seat one. I was in seat nine. [Action] folded around to me in the small blind and I had him covered. I think he had 15 big blinds and was short-stacking for an hour or two. I just shoved king-jack into him when we were blind versus blind. He ended up waking up with pocket queens and held up there. That kind of chipped me down. When you’re playing a tournament and you’ve got a short stack in the big blind, how wide is your shipping range if he’s folding so often? In that spot, I don’t think he’ll be calling off too lightly since he still has fold equity after going through the blinds. Well another thing to take into consideration to add to that is that I’m a female. To him, I’m unknown. I think at that point, I was relatively new to the table. Even after being at the table for an hour-and-a-half, in live poker, you just don’t see that many hands. He didn’t get to see much of my play. So, I think that his calling range may actually be a bit tighter than against some other opponents where he might call off a bit lighter knowing it’s correct. PokerStove is a really a great tool even with the age of online poker halted right now. It was a tool we used for online, but even when I go out and play live, I’ll come home at the end of the day and use the PokerStove to see equity-versus-implied calling ranges. So in that spot, given all that, when has 15 big blinds, I have him covered, and it won’t cripple my stack at all, I’d shove four-five suited, nine-ten offsuit plus, any pair. So yeah, [I’d shove] pretty wide. Because even when you’re called which is like 10 to 15 percent of the time, you’ll still win like a third of the time, so you have to shove a ton no matter what.

GI Joe Assaults Online Poker, Refrigerated Beer, Noobs
published on 03/18/11 at 7:09 am Angel Valdez is working towards the American dream. By waking up at noon, cracking opening a PBR, and giving online poker a shot full-time. We talk to the recently unemployed McDonald’s cashier, now full time poker player and owner of the Online Poker Team (OPT) to see what he is all about. Special interviewer, Street3, makes an appearance to ask a few of his own questions. What is the background on your twitter name, GI Joe Valdez? Big into kids and toys? Was Snake Eyes the coolest “Joe”? Why not the nickname, El Burro?I was in the Army for 8 years and was pretty crazy. One time one of the older guys said “slow your roll gijoe and take it easy” and it stuck since then some called me gijoe. After I got out of the Army I created an email with that name. Nothing glorious about it but it has stuck. Now most people that don’t know my real name call me Joe. Why did you start the OPT?Other players and I used to be a part of another online poker team but they were jerks when it came time to play. If you lost they were all over you, and put a lot of pressure for you to finish out your allotment. Talked to a couple of other unhappy players and they suggested I start my own. I did and took it from there. I made it a lot of fun to be a part of this team with zero drama and been very lucky so far. Has this endeavor been profitable? The OPT: Yes, when we first started The OPT share were sold at $5 each. Now they are close to $6, and when we started I begged players to join we now have a waiting list and its not as easy to get in.Full time poker pro: I’m on day 3 and if I continue min cashing in this fashion I will be broke sooner then 2 weeks. What are your plans if you do not find a job when your bankroll runs out next week?I been lucky to have made a lot of final tables in my online poker career so I paid close attention to all the rail beggars. Noted all their sappy questions and how they get players to ship them money. Its better then standing by the freeway with a sign. I can beg from home. Just open up a final table and go to work. If you were a “pro” who would you like to sponsor you? Some whale that doesn’t care if they lose money. Mike Matusow is probably the biggest candidate. I’ve seen him stake some really bad players in the Main event so I figured I can’t do any worse. What is the square root of 9?There is a square in 9? Had to Google that. 3 it says. What is your favorite poker game? Cash/tourney? The most you have ever won and lost?Favorite game are Super Turbos MTT, 2nd favorite are Rush games, 3rd are deepstack/double stack MTT’s. I don’t play cash games at all, but when I have I’ve done pretty well. The most I have won in an MTT has been $3300 on Pokerstars, and $2200 several times on Fulltilt. The most I’ve lost in an MTT online was $110 and in cash game $77 I think. Live game I spent $125 to play a sat which I won. That gave me $1100 to play a wsopc event. I didn’t cash so that sucked. I’m a bankroll nit so… Noob Was it a good or bad decision, on my part, to allow Street3 into this interview? Explain this. Its always good to let Street3 into any conversation with you. He will make you look good. You could be picking your nose live on TV and no one will notice anything but his big forehead. See attached pic… space is available for advertisement on his forehead so he says… Check/Call or Bet/Fold? Why?Both.Check/call: when using pot control. If you have top pair and weak kicker or fear other player flopped bigger hand.Bet/fold: is what I use when in agro mode and I use it vs any number of opponents. You get so much information by throwing out a bet. At best they all fold or 1 calls the rest fold, and at worse case scenario they all fold and 1 re-raises you, or they all call. What piece of advice would you give a first time online poker player?Don’t get started. QUIT! Turn around and go play checkers. But if he really doesn’t like that advice I suggest getting some proper training or a solid coach, read up on the game, have a nice bankroll to back you up, set your priorities, and stick to a routine. I’ve seen a lot of players go on tilt in poker but it doesn’t stop there. Usually that carries across there other parts of their life and they crash and burn. There are a lot of stories on the news about gamblers robbing some casino, held up another player, or held up a bank or convenience store. If you aren’t patient in life you will definitely not succeed in poker. While this game skill has 70% of chance the other 30% is lady luck’s doing and she’s a cold hart bitch. If you aren’t ready for the losses or can’t handle it then don’t get started. This game is filled with skilled and solid players, and it takes time for a noob to get there. This game can be a lot of fun just don’t let it get you down. Related posts: Online Poker Player Plays His Cards Close To The Vest Black Friday Saves One Player’s Money & Relationship

Strategy with Kristy Podcast Part 2 with Tommy Angelo
September 08 2011, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy Podcast Part 1 with Tommy Angelo Strategy with Kristy Podcast Part 2 with Andrew Seidman The Strategy with Kristy Podcast Premiere Episode Share It Tags Poker Strategy, PokerNews Strategy, PokerNews Podcast Print Tommy Angelo is a well-respected poker player, writer and coach. He’s best known for penning, Elements of Poker, which addresses the mental side of poker. In Part 1 of his interview for the Strategy with Kristy podcast, he discussed how to begin improving your poker mindset, and also addressed the common hurdles players face during the process. For Part 2, Angelo talks about how to deal with lack of confidence, gives advice for online players transitioning to live poker, and covers mediation techniques. Here is a snippet from the interview: Another tactic you use with your students is meditation. I think that word is a little scary for most poker players. [Laughs] Very scary. Is it because it’s so unknown? What is it about meditation that frightens players? Well, actually you hit on the classic right there. What we fear is the unknown. The reason people have fears and misconceptions built up about meditation is simply from lack of knowledge, lack of understanding. The way I go about it in poker coaching is that I try to draw on practices that I think a person can do in their current state. So for most people, the act of doing a formal sitting meditation takes multiple exposures over a long period of time before someone can even get to the point where they are non-resistant enough to even try that. That’s rarely where I start with my clients. It’s usually a case of getting them to do the act of sitting up, making yourself still, and calmly being aware of your own mind and body. Observe your own thoughts. That’s called mindfulness. That practice is something anyone can do and anyone who does that at the poker table, I believe, is going to make more money than if they didn’t. I look at what the smoothest possible slope of entry is when I’m introducing these kinds of concepts. I find out what anxieties they have about it, or what fears and misconceptions. And then I say, ‘If you just do this simple thing, I think you’ll make more money.’ It’s very, very easy to prove or disprove this because all you have to do is try it for a while, and come back and tell me what happened.
