The Best Online Poker Rooms

Poker has always been a very popular means of entertainment and leisure activity for people. And when we think of poker and gambling
we naturally visualize some crowded casino or bar
with a table where some people are seated with tensed or clever smiling faces
and others are standing behind
as if ready for the next commotion!

But gone are those days. With the advent of the online poker
why would anyone waste their time
money and energy for a simple poker game when they can just download some poker playing software
open an account and start playing? But before you can start trying your hand at online poker
you need to find a good room. Needless to say
there are
if not thousands
hundreds of poker playing rooms popping out everyday which you come across with a simple click on the search engine. Some of the beginners stick with first one they try
but they don’t understand that by this
they are losing out on the better bigger opportunities. Each poker playing room has its own unique offers and advantages and all of them differ from each other in certain aspects. They normally differ according to the competition
types of games they hold and promotional bonuses offered time to time. Now
some of the best online poker playing rooms is given below but it is wise to remember that they are not all that you can find:

Poker Stars: They started their business at around the year 2002 and since then they are considered one of the most reliable and best poker playing rooms found online. But the downside of this room is that it doesn’t offer any special bonuses to the beginners or the newcomers
and it certainly has more competition than many other sites on the internet. But
the number of respectable players playing here regularly and the bonus deposited in their account do balance it up.
Titan Poker: It is relatively a new site that arrived in the Internet gambling market of online poker rooms. The service quality they offer guarantees their place at the top three but they hold very less number of games and for that matter
finding a table on any game other than Texas Hold’em is quite hard. But they do offer luring promotional bonuses
which might be a plus-point for the beginners.
Full Tilt Poker: Full Tilt Poker
though it finishes third after the Poker Stars and the Titan Poker
can be given a try at least for the exceptional promotional bonuses and offers that they render at times. But the downside is that the players there are very tight and finding a loose aggressive one is like a chance of a lifetime. In the world of internet gambling and poker playing
new rooms come up while old ones close down. So
it is always best to create a back-up and try out a number of online poker rooms.

Playing Poker Online – What You Really Need to Know

Online Poker vs. Online Gambling:

Poker is a game of skill
and every decision you make is about maximizing your Expected Value or EV for short. The term “EV” will be used throughout this article and will be seen in two ways. A player can have +EV
which is positive Expected Value or – EV
which is negative Expected Value. Poker is not gambling and the following explains why.

Most gambling games have a negative EV for you
and a positive EV (5.49% in this case) for the casino. In the short run you could win
but in the long run
if you played typical gambling games 1000 times
the casino would always end up winning by about 5.49%. As you can see these types of gambling games are in favor of the house. Poker pits you against other players and not the house. In a full ring game (9 players) or shorthanded game (6 players)
the goal is to make the best EV decisions against the many other players playing worse (making -EV decisions) than you.

A simple example would be if you were dealt KK before the flop came (preflop)
which everyone knows is a good hand preflop. This hand has a high chance to win against all other hands preflop. If you played and raised “all in” with this hand against a player who played and called every all in
you would have a huge advantage as you will be a favorite every time
making it a +EV decision. This is an exaggerated example and playing one hand would not be the smartest idea. What you would do is play say the top 20% of hands because against a person who plays maybe 70% of their hands
you again
will be making a +EV decision every time you play with him. It’s likely that your starting hands will have a lot higher probability to win. This is just scraping the surface
and there is an EV attached to every decision and every situation. Many online poker sites provide starting hand charts for beginners to use
which would be the simplest way to improve your EV.

In addition
there is always variance and in the short term weaker players might get lucky
but that’s also what attracts them to come back and keep playing. In the long run
a good player who always makes +EV decisions will always end up a winner. This is why poker is not gambling but a game of skill and understanding how to exploit your opponent’s mistakes.

Is it safe to play online poker?

Absolutely
some sites have over 50
000 people playing at one time. Major sites like Full Tilt Poker run advertisements on the TV and the web and are even listed on the stock market. They allow you to play poker online for free or real money. Any negative publicity would affect their business so these sites often provide the best customer service. Keeping your password secure is your responsibility and if you do this
your money will be safe. Online poker sites have no incentive to cheat when dealing hands since they want to be extremely fair so you continue to play
which allows them to earn their income in the form of “rake.” This is a very small percent of the pot (usually less than 1%). In poker
you are playing against the other players
and not the house.

Obviously if the poker site seems shady
you have never heard of it
they don’t advertise on TV or the web and there aren’t members playing on a regular basis – you wouldn’t be depositing your money there!!! With that said
most of the major poker sites are very safe and reputable.

What are the best online poker rooms?
There are three major sites for playing online poker. Full Tilt Poker
Pokerstars and Party Poker have lots of traffic
play money tables
plenty of freeroll tournaments and have very good customer support. If you’re a beginner you should play at Full Tilt Poker or Pokerstars when you start. Other sites like Party Poker call you up after you sign up and require some form of id verification to activate your account. Some people may like this extra security
and can certainly go that route. Full Tilt Poker and Pokerstars do not require this. Overall
all three sites are incredibly safe and well known.

Many sites state “Deposit and get another $600!” Do they really double your deposit amount after depositing?

That depends on the site. Some sites give you a very small portion (around 10%) of your deposit instantly
but that is rare. What typically happens is you deposit $600
and then after you accumulate a certain amount of player points
they will give you the full $600. This is to ensure depositing players are also active. With online poker sites such as Full Tilt Poker these points are achieved very quickly.

Online sites will publish poker bonus codes which must be entered upon account creation. After that
the amount you earn depends on the time you spend playing and the stakes you play at. When a player reaches 400NL limit
which means 2 to 4 dollar blinds and have a good percent of wins
they can make up to 5K a month. This is of course if you treat playing like a job and dedicate several hours every day to playing. Ultimately job freedom and the lure of easy money that is just a click away
is what draws so many people to online poker.

The Future of Online Poker

Online poker has had an interesting history so far. This popular pastime is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands or recreational players
many of who aren’t even sure whether they are breaking any laws or not by playing. There have been scandals at online poker rooms
banking problems
mergers and takeovers
and entire businesses created that sell external software tools to help players do better. Even with all this
the poker rooms are full of players. Poker lovers are determined to play online as long as there is some method available to them for depositing and withdrawing funds.

The future of this industry remains rather cloudy however
despite the fact that it commands a tremendous source of revenue and is popular with the public. So much depends on legal developments within the countries that contain the largest market segments. Currently there is no federal law against online gambling in the United States. However Internet gambling is expressly outlawed in 8 individual states.

More importantly
however
is the fact that there is a law banning banks in the U.S. from making transactions to and from internet gambling institutions. This law was piggybacked on to the “Safe Port Act” on the last day before the Senate broke by the number one Google result for the search term “corrupt senator.” It was later discovered that this Senator received 25% of his campaign funds from Harrah’s Entertainment
the large offline gambling company. The senator was not re-elected but the law stands.

As a result of this law there was a major reshuffling of power in the online poker industry. The largest online poker room was Party Poker but they decided to pull out of the U.S. to avoid possible legal issues. Several other popular poker rooms and networks followed in suit. The well-known poker rooms who decided to stay have taken over all that business. This put Poker Stars squarely in the number one spot. Party Poker doesn’t even make the top five any more.

A major scandal broke at Absolute Poker
one of the top poker rooms as a result of their decision to still cater to the American market. It turns out that several of the software developers had built themselves in “back doors” which allowed them to see other player’s cards. These guys fleeced other players out of millions of dollars over a two-year period before they were caught. A legitimate concern over the fairness of games at all internet poker sites naturally resulted.

Private software developers are very creative in making products which help online poker players. Most of these are analytical programs which collect data and sort it into statistics on your opponents. Some of them have amazing features and display this data right on the poker table. Many of these programs are specifically banned at some of the major poker rooms.

Then there are the poker bots. These are banned at all online poker rooms. Not because the site operators have an issue with you using a software program that pays rake automatically for 12 hours per day
but because many recreational players are paranoid of poker bots and so it’s a good public relation policy. Interestingly
only Poker Stars has actually done anything about actually preventing them from being used in their games. While most of these programs are of poor quality
a few good ones are starting to emerge. And there is a great interest in them at the retail level.

So what is the future of online poker? Hard to tell
but I will venture a guess. Most likely there will be tougher anti-online gambling laws enacted in the states at some point resulting in a further consolidation of the industry. Perhaps two or three of the largest rooms will still operate there
providing creative banking alternatives as they do now. Expect fewer poker rooms
not more. However the ones that remain will own the industry. And somebody will finally get smart and
operate a poker room that encourages the use of outside software
even building your own poker bot.
